About
History
Wirksworth is a small historic lead mining town near Matlock, Derbyshire which nestles in the Dales. ![]()
Wirksworth Running Club was set up in 2004 by a group of like minded friends who enjoyed running and wanted to set up a small friendly local club. From the start the Club has set out to attract runners of all age groups and backgrounds who quite simply had a passion or interest in running whether to compete, get fit or simply to meet new people and make new friends. The first meeting was held on Wednesday 29th September 2004 where over 30 runners turned up ranging from 13 to 55 years old! The Club has gone on from strength to strength since then.
There are no conditions imposed on membership. All we want is for people to come along and enjoy the freedom of running – whether that means 2 miles, 10 miles or 20 + miles. If you have never run before you are just as welcome as a seasoned runner.
Training
We meet every Wednesday at 6.45pm at Wirksworth Leisure Centre aiming to start our run at 7.00pm.
There are two/three running groups to cater for different abilities:
- New runners – Introducing you to some easy runs in and around Wirksworth
- Established – For more ambitious runners with various routes of approximately 5 or 6 miles duration at a good training pace or faster with other runners depending upon how everyone feels on the night. If necessary the group splits to allow for the different abilities.
All runs, wherever possible, are off-road along the High Peak Trail, local hills and fields and footpaths unless the weather dictates that the runs have to be on road when the local country lanes are used. Whatever the route it is guaranteed to be scenic!
Other Sessions (check diary for dates)
Monthly time trial – First Monday in each month. Start Cromford crossroads café from 7pm. Self-timed run over a fixed, flat 5 mile out and back road route
Muddy Feet group - Meet once a month on a Saturday or Sunday off road in the local Derbyshire Dales. Normally departing Wirksworth Market Place 9.30am. Route planning usually provides the opportunity for pub lunch/ refreshments after the run. Off road shoes required.
Booths Decorators Cross-Country League – The Club participates in both the Winter and Summer Leagues. The Winter League consists of five cross-country races of between 4 and 5 miles held on Sundays at 11.00am, one a month from October.
The summer league races are held on a Tuesday night starting in May at 7.00pm. All races are team events for both men and women.
